Songs I Missed #13: A Different Format, and a Lot of Kpop

Songs I Missed 13

Good morning, fellow Kpoppers!

As you probably know by now, I get really behind on Kpop releases, and it’s not a good time when I am inactive for months on end and still need to comment on a bunch of them. So, I am trying out a new format so I can point out all the things that are good, the okay, and the bad. It might make things a little more interesting and fun to look at, or it might just be annoying and not that great.

The past few months of Kpop have had a lot of really good singles. The warmer months always seem to bring the best out of Kpop, so it’s super exciting to watch things get better and better. Unfortunately, both SISTAR and T-ARA are leaving Kpop for good, so that has made the past few months sad at times. However, what we have is a lot of music to go through, so let’s get started!

BLACKPINK’s “As If It’s Your Last” is Not a Complete Swagfest, but Still Problematic

BLACKPINKAsIfItsYourLast7

BLACKPINK are a strange group to write about. Branded as “the new 2NE1” by YG Entertainment, they’ve got their fair share of fans and haters alike, and the critical reception of the group has been anything but forgiving. Most of the bloggers I follow seem to blame this on YG in general because they just don’t know how to create girl groups. I’ve been sitting here with bated breath since their debut for something that would make BLACKPINK, well, BLACKPINK. It kills me when a group gets stagnated because of the way they’re marketed, so I’ve been waiting for the day BLACKPINK gets past this awkward phase and becomes the group they were destined to be.

Today was not that day.

9Muses Come Back with a Vengeance in “Remember”

9MusesRemember3

9Muses are perhaps one of the most consistent girl groups in Kpop, but with absolutely nothing to show for it beyond a cult following and the reputation of “most underrated girl group.” I’ve been following them ever since their glittery 80s throwback, “News” and energetic “Ticket” hit the scene, and save for a couple duds they’re my favorite girl group ever.

On top of being the most underrated girl group, 9Muses is known for having more member changes than you can shake a stick at. The first thing that may come to mind is “why are they called 9Muses when there are only four members,” and at this point the only thing I could tell you is it’s all about brand value. Most recently, the subgroup 9Muses A (which, ironically, was the first group I ever wrote a blog post about) just became 9Muses since Sungah for whatever reason is out of the picture, and there are only two original members remaining.

However, I can say without a shadow of a doubt that “Remember” is the best track 9Muses have had in years.

BLACKPINK’s Comeback Teaser Looks Like A Swag-fest from Hell

As some of you might know, I am probably one of the few people blogging about Kpop that even remotely likes BLACKPINK. Most people call them “2NE1 2.0” or any amount of other names to just denigrate them as a bottom-of-the-pack girl group. However, if you’ve been following me for a while you would also know that “Playing With Fire” was in my Top 3 Songs of the Year. I’ve been waiting for a BLACKPINK comeback for ages, but this just isn’t it.

Songs I Missed #12: Dreamcatcher, DAY6, Teen Top, and more!

Songs I Missed 12

Good afternoon, my fellow Kpoppers.

It’s a Saturday afternoon, and I thought I would take the time to write some posts about the past few weeks’ releases. This is gonna be a long list because a lot of big names have come out with some new songs, and for once I’m keeping up with Kpop really well. However, I’ll have to split things into two different Songs I Missed lists because I don’t want to overload one post with, like, 30 videos. So here’s 15 of the songs I’ve missed!

Oh My Girl Pulls a “Rookie,” Arin Gets Sungyeoled in “Coloring Book”

OhMyGirlColoringBook3
This group of household objects includes everything but the kitchen sink…oh wait, that might be there too.

I haven’t had a proper review to talk about Oh My Girl to any extent, save for my Top 25 songs of 2016, where they were mentioned not once, but twice. Needless to say, they are one of my favorite rookies from last year, and I was super-excited for them to get away from the reggae sound they had in the latter half of 2016 from collaborations with Skull and Haha.

However, “Coloring Book” sounds like a weird step to take after “Windy Day” and “Liar, Liar.” It follows a strange trend started by Red Velvet’s “Rookie,” and I’m not quite sure how I feel about it.

Songs I Missed #11: IU, Girl’s Day, A-Pink, and more!

Songs I Missed 11
No, I’m not using this gif because I’m liking A-Pink in any way at all.

And so, the “Nae Catches Up on Kpop” project has been done with, and so we bring in the next “Songs I Missed” post for the last week (yes I know I’m late I’m trying to play it off as if I’m not). Starting from March 22nd, and extending all the way to March 29th, here’s my take on last week’s releases!
