I feel weird about this sub-unit for a couple of reasons.
For one thing, it feels like a rushed endeavor in order to fill the space after members Euaerin and Minha left the group this past June, leaving the group at only six members. The second thing is the fact that I still haven’t quite warmed up to Keumjo, who seems to stand out like a sore thumb in the group, and she ended up being in this project.
If I’m thinking about this from a commercial standpoint, it makes sense that Star Empire would attempt a sub-unit while they think about replacing the members to bring it back to a nine-member line-up. It’s throwing a bone for the fans who have been waiting for a comeback since “Sleepless Night,” from this past November.
Unfortunately, “Lip 2 Lip” didn’t live up to my expectations.
Now, don’t get me wrong. The song is not a bad one. In fact, it’s a rather decent slice of Kpop, and the “la li la” part of the chorus is not too bad. At the same time, though, this is a sub-unit from an established group, and the song feels like something that would be given to an unknown group from an unknown company. It’s truly too bad because with the revolving door of member changes, 9Muses really needs a boost right now, even if it comes in the for of a sub-unit.
